Storyboard and Misc – Studio 3 – Semester 2


20180417_193740.jpgConsidering the amount of printed out papers were quite thick and were at a total of 80 scenes, we wondered how long it would roughly be in a movie format. Which can be found RIGHT HERE!

In other words we have made some other tiny assets in the spare time we had.

In one of the Alphas I had to design the logo of the Mayor “Albatatis” who controls the robots, his factory firm is called Arbak Industries.


Does the logo have any meaning behind it?

Yes as you can see the second A in ARBAK is shaped with an underline is to symbolize about the eldertree from our early drafts of the story. Because the Citadel where the mayor lives is created out of the biggest tree in all of Abashi, said to have connected and been the source of all the other living trees and grass on the continent and was blessed by the sun god. When Albatatis cut the majority of this tree down, he cut down the life support of all the other nature around him dooming the civilazation to forever live in a fading environment, inevitably leading to a desert as everything god dryer and dryer.

The sun god got angry with him and decided to punish humanity to forever live in this environment they had created themselves. He punished them by promising to always be the burning hatred in the sky who would dry out everything and make it inhabitable to regrow nature there. But as the climate changes, so does nature. So the humanity survived on water from cactuses and natural rain water. Until Albatatis manage to create synthesized water which he would obviously use as a power stance. Promising to end the water support of every citizen if anyone ever stood in his way.

His office is a giant citadel which is where the old gigantic tree stood, and it is built to look like the old tree. As it is quite symbolic of how he punished everyone for his actions and rose to power.

Now back to the logo, the shape of the old Tree kind of resembles of the letter “A”. The connected underlines are meant to represent the vines going through the earth connecting everything.

To implement this logo into the project as not only in the shape of a texture, I recreated the photoshop made logo in Illustrator as a Vector file which is not made out of pixels but rather lossless lines.


Then I imported the vector file in to Maya and created a beveled object out of the curves the program provided for me.

All I had to do now was some initial cleanup and then I had a 3D model of the logo.

This is the scene where most of the alphas with words will go on each template to signalize whenever something occurs in the field such as “Intruder Alert” “Breach” “In Sector B” or “Emergency” “Lay-Z” “Is Eating Lard” for example. Just a couple of the combinations to put together.

This Scene is a parody from the opening of a Team Fortress 2 animated movie called “Meet The Spy”

Which we are really forward about, so that no one thinks we are deliberately trying to rip off  a scene from another film without giving them the credit for it, because that’s what you have to do when you are making a parody about something.

Which is why we included a tiny easter egg to kinda poke fun about this in the alphas we are going to put on the board itself.

Which is why we decided to address this and poke fun at it.

Could this project be in potential problems about breaking the copyright of Valve Corporations IP for making something very similar to the opening scene in “Meet the spy”?

Absolutely not. It’s heavily referenced and inspired but has some differences here and there. Even though it is not entirely similar we still looked in to the matter legally, and conducted research. What we found out which greenlit us to go for this funny idea of making fun of Team Fortress 2 and kind of referencing it in our animated short, was the fact that Valve Corporation actually endorse all of it’s consumers to make parodies and use their IP for whatever they want. In an issued interview, Head of Valve “Gabe Newell” even stated that their engine “Source” is being used by their consumers to mainly make pornography which they have no problem with.

In every Team Fortress 2 animated short, they have a title card with the title of the video. At the bottom, it says on every single one of them “Copyright LOLOLOL” which means LOL a common online term used as “Laughing Out Loud”.

So what this means is that they are not protective about their IP. In fact several fans have made several projects based on Valve IP’s for free, one of the biggest called Garry’s Mod, which is a modded version of their engine where you can pose assets and make pretty much anything your mind can come to.

To endorse this even more, they even specifically released their animation software for free on their platform called SFM, so that fans can use their assets to create free animated movies without having to worry about any sort of licensing.

All of these movies are monetized on youtube without any issue.

How long did this take to make?

Oskar and I were incredibly tired because we had been working for over 10 hours every day, planing every scene, every shot, every sound, every movement just the 2 of us.

We spent a total of 2 weeks doing this.


Didn’t the Logo look differently during Design for Interactivity?

That is entirely correct! I originally came up with the design for the logo in Design for Interactivity.


But I initially changed the font’s place and color, to shake things up a bit.

I took some inspiration from old cartoon magazine covers, since they are not very serious and more action packed, made to look cool and is very retro/stylized.

Narrative – Mistakes Were Made

During this course we had something called Narrative. Narrative is gathering information and studying the concept of telling a story such as visuals, sounds, stories, characters and concept.

Starting the course, I could not make it the first day due to travel issues all the way from Oslo, so I had to wait 1 day to return home to Kristiansand. Once I arrived the second day, I asked Magnus if there was any group I could participate in and I was referred to a group with 6 people. Fearing we were too many, it didn’t become any problem during this course and we did not step on each others feet. In the group was Oscar, Phong, Marcus, Kitti, Lars, Runar and me. After being shortly briefed about what the concept they had come up with, I learned that the name of the group was “Mistakes Were Made” which also reflected back on the story being told.

We used a lot of time brainstorming together and discussing what parts we should include in the story and what not to include. I wrote down all of the ideas we had come up with on a white board and told everyone they could only vote on 1 of the ideas. After the voting we landed on 3 main ideas to include in the story and removed the others that didn’t receive enough votes. Now that we had a story briefed, it was time to start writing down what we had been actually discussing. So we all gathered around in the computer lab and created a Google Docs document which everyone can write at the same time. Oscar and Phong wrote most of this because they had put together the entire story and knew it by heart.

Completing task 1, it was time for task 2 which was recording a 30 second film where the bodylanguage was the main focus. So behind camera was Me, Kitti and Oscar. In front of the camera was Phong, Marcus, Lars and Runar. Kitti and I directed most of the movie and explained to the selected actors what to do. This went surprisingly fast due to the fact that Kitti and I already had experience with filming and directing movies.

After recording, it turned out I was the only one with experience of editing movies. After completing High School I learned the entire Adobe Master Collection by heart, and because they had that installed at school I used Adobe Premiere to edit the movie. We also agreed that everyone would draw and submit their storyboard from a scene in the story. So as I was editing the movie the others on the group started drawing their storyboards.

As we were closing in on completing the project, we needed a background audio that correspond with the setting and the mood of our story. Marcus did this part of the project as he had a lot of experience with music and playing guitar. The result was excellent.

The presentation went rather okay in my opinion. I managed to screw up my time schedule for the presentation because I was so afraid of screwing it up the night before. So I arrived 20 minutes late, but just in time to join my group in presenting it.

As for the overall summary, the course was a fun experience and I was pleased with working as a group of 7 people. It’s like they say, the more chefs you have for making a meal, the messier it gets. But as for this group I wouldn’t say so. I think it went really smooth! Everyone did their job and everyone contributed. To begin with I was scared that it would end up as one big group of organized chaos. It was organized yes, but the group was never chaos.

Character Visulization

I came up with an idea as for how I wanted John Doe too look like.

I drew John Doe as a sort of Hippie like character considering his lust for peace, with his Peace Tshirt where it’s written under a quote from a famous Peace Fighter from his time and era. Of course as mentioned in the Character Creation sheet, John Doe was a war machine before his memory loss and ended up as a hippie. But he also has traits from his previous lifestyle as a war machine, the Peace Symbol can also be represented as a Nuclear Symbol, and he is wearing a military trench coat.

Basic Description

Name: Unknown, Referred to as John Doe

Sex: Male

Race/Species: Caucasian

Age: 35

Intelligence: Skilled as in “Tactical thinking”.

Education Type and Level: A former war veteran.

Economic Background: John grew up with his brother and father in Seattle. Not having a mother, his father was hard on him and his big brother. Demanding that they had to prove him their loyalty to him and their country. At an age of 14, John was already being trained to join the army, despite what he wanted to do with his own life.

Profession: Skilled soldier from the Military.

Vocabulary: Short and confused.

General Attitude: John is a confused man, focused on finding out who he is and where he came from. His actions are panicked and quick, with a trust problem towards anyone and everyone. He dislikes war and weapons, even though he is “naturally” good with it.

Backstory: John Doe is a man without a name. He grew up with only one parent and a sibling. A difficult father and a big brother. Being forced into the military at a young age against his will, John was dispatched onto heavy duties in the military for several years. The more time he spent in the military, less he saw of his family. During his time in the military, John got better at his precision shooting, close quarters combat, athletic qualities and his physical stamina and strength. Being good at what he had turned into, holding a weapon was like holding a glass of water for John. It was normal. Slowly turning into a cold machine and a war tool, John began to gain a reputation. His face was known to both enemies and allies. Both negative reputation and good. Being in the middle of a reputation crisis, John tried to escape for the sake of his life. The military wanted to send him out on more dispatch missions despite his demands for staying back at his platform. His head was the biggest priority the enemy craved for. Going out on more missions would be suicide. As John faced no other solution but to run, no sides he could part with, he encountered a conflict while being on the run. A conflict which made him forget his goals, his family, his past and his entire life. Suffering from amnesia, John Doe is confused and paranoid. If that really even is his name after all.

Deeper Dive
(This section is most geared toward writers and designers who will determine what the character can, might, and/or will do within the framework of the story and game)

Desire: John’s desire is to get peace with himself. Being confused if he wants to find out who he originally was or if he should start his life over without knowing his past is yet to be decided.

Likes: John likes peace. Hearing the ambient in his quiet room. Having a clear mind and not worrying about things.

Dislikes: War. Destruction and violence.

Values: John values silence and being alone. Considering he’s an introvert, John appreciates being to himself. His thought on how living life is with a cold drink in his hand and a TV all to himself.

Key flaw(s): John is a former war veteran. Due to the fact that he has bailed on his broken life without knowing, he now desires a normal life. Unfortunately for John, people from his old life might be looking for him.

Vices: Without knowing, John is a slave to war. Even though he desires peace, he is still on the run from the war he took part in. Once a veteran, always a veteran. His habits starts to show which scares him and is something he tries to repress.

Character Arc/Change: Since John belonged to the military, his character was a serious and proud figure. His personality was a hard and cold machine, whom did not care about anyone other than himself and his missions. One thing John put before anything else was his own life.

After the incident, John still has some of the old traits from his previous life. He is a confused and paranoid character whom desires for peace. Previously being sure about mostly everything, John is now unsure about nearly anything. He wants peace but can’t get it.

Physical attributes: John has a sense of over-dressing himself in normal occasions. Wearing nice and proud clothing is a trait he still has from his old life.

Movement: John usually moving synchronized with the same pace like he did in the military.

Clothing: John wears a classy shirt and west when alone. In public he wears a Tuxedo.

Weapons/Paraphernalia: John despise weapons. All though he still has his quick and tactical reactions and CQC without remembering it, it comes naturally to him.
